DIY Acne Treatment: Sea Salt Toner

Acne is something I suffered with through my teens, and I know how it can knock confidence. While I had it I was given next to no advice on how to clear it (other than to clean my skin twice a day, and then given a foul smelling topical treatment to apply which did not work for me at all). I was not told to avoid foaming cleansers (seriously, do avoid them), and was definitely not told about the healing
properties of salt.
Many people with acne find that after swimming in the ocean their skin looks a lot clearer. This is because salt is a natural antiseptic, and helps heal the skin.
Though, as autumn is already upon us, I doubt many of us would brave a dip in the sea!

This is a very quick, and extremely cheap, DIY tutorial to help give you clear, beautiful skin:

Difficulty Rating:

-Fill a spray bottle with water.
-Add (approx) 1tsp of ground sea salt to the water, close lid, and shake well until the salt disappears.

-Shake well before each use.
-Spray toner onto a cotton pad, and apply to your skin (after cleansing)
-Moisturise as usual.

Use this as you feel necessarry. Everyone's skin is different. For example: If you find it a bit too drying use it every other day, as apposed to everyday.

I got this recipe from one of my favourite Youtube Guru's: Andreas Choice.
I no longer have acne, but do get troubled skin from time to time. I started using this toner today, and will report my thoughts on it once I've had a chance to use it more.
But it is all natural, and salt has been used for centuries to cure skin ailments, so I do have a lot of faith in it.

For more sea salt skincare recipes (including this one) check out her video here.

I would be very interested to know if anyone's used salt to clear acne before, and how well it worked.

  1. Love, love, love! Sea salt is amazing. When my skin gets bad I wash it in salt water. It does wonders!

  2. Ooh really? I wish I'd found out about sea salt sooner! I'm definitely going to add it to my regime xx

  3. I meant to ask you before, why are foaming cleansers bad for acne? I am going to write a blog post about how foaming cleansers are gentle on the skin with regards to pre-mature aging but hadn't head about the acne problem before.

  4. Because for it to foam it turns the skin alkaline, which encourages more germs to breed. Which you definitely don't want if you suffer from acne. It's better explained here with more cleansing tips: http://www.beautymouth.com/2011/07/cleansing-cheat-sheet.html Would love to hear your thoughts xx

  5. That makes a lot of sense!!! Thank you

  6. I reblogged this post.. :D Hope you don't mind..

  7. Finding acne remedies that work well with my skin are usually hard to come by.

  8. Not at all. Thank you for linking back to me :) xx

  9. Is it ok to use regular salt? Or does it have to be sea salt? I know that sea salt would be better, though!

  10. Is it ok to use regular salt? I know that sea salt is the better option, but I was just wondering.

  11. It should really be sea salt. Normal table salt might irritate your skin, plus sea salt is said to have minerals that are really beneficial to your skin. I picked up a bag of sea salt quite cheaply from Holland and Barrett, and still haven't finished it.
I also use it in another DIY skin care product that I'll be posting up next week, so you can definitely get a lot of use out of it! :) xx

  12. I would be flattened if all websites gave articles like that.acne products

  13. It has to be sea salt. Table salt is missing a lot of the minerals that sea salt has and bath salts have fragrance and color added which can cause your skin to breakout. You can get the pure sea salt from Ocean Cleanse

  14. I am a huge believer in using the sea to help mend your skin problems. It works wonders and that is why I developed my own skin care line that includes Dead Sea salt in each product. I have noticed a huge difference in my skin and will never go back to the store bought products! I also carry a sea salt toner and I love it so much. Nothing like that feeling that you get when you get out of the ocean. If you want take a look www.detoxskinintervention.com

  15. Hi, i also watched Andreas Choice's video and i was wondering how the toner went for you?

  16. At first I thought it was Jessica Alba for some reason acne no more book price (on those shots only mind). Don't you think Karlie looks a little like her there?

  17. can you just spray it on your face or it's better to spray it on a cotton pad first?

  18. Great DIY! Thanks for sharing :)

  19. thanks for your diy its wonderful
